CHAPTER 9: PERIMETER AND AREA

What are Perimeter and Area?

Imagine you want to build a fence around your garden - that's perimeter! If you want to plant grass inside the garden - that's area!

Simple Difference:

Perimeter: Distance around a shape (fencing)

Area: Space inside a shape (carpeting)

Perimeter = Total boundary length

Area = Total surface covered

Real-Life Examples

Football Field:

Perimeter: Running track around the field

Area: Grass surface for playing

Room in House:

Perimeter: Length of skirting boards

Area: Space for carpet or tiles

Farm Land:

Perimeter: Fence around the farm

Area: Land for growing crops

Common Shapes

Rectangle:

Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)

Area = Length × Width

Like a notebook or door

Square:

Perimeter = 4 × Side

Area = Side × Side

Like a chess board square

Circle:

Perimeter (Circumference) = 2πr

Area = πr²

Like a pizza or wheel

What You Will Learn

In this chapter, we will learn:

  • What is perimeter and area
  • Perimeter of rectangles and squares
  • Area of rectangles and squares
  • Perimeter and area of triangles
  • Circumference and area of circles
  • Finding area of combined shapes
  • Real-life applications

Why is it Important?

Perimeter and area help us:

  • Plan how much paint to buy for walls
  • Calculate carpet needed for rooms
  • Plan fencing for gardens
  • Calculate land for farming
  • Design sports fields
  • Plan tile layout in bathrooms
  • Calculate fabric for clothes
