CHAPTER 2: FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS

What are Fractions?

Have you ever shared a pizza with friends? If you eat 2 slices out of 8, you ate a fraction! Fractions show parts of a whole.

Pizza Example:

Whole pizza = 8 slices

You eat = 2 slices

Your fraction = ²⁄₈ or ¼ (one quarter)

What are Decimals?

Decimals are just another way to write fractions. We see them every day!

Money Examples:

₹10.50 = Ten rupees and fifty paise

½ kg sugar = 0.5 kg sugar

¾ meter cloth = 0.75 meters

Everyday Examples

In the Kitchen:

Recipe: ½ cup sugar = 0.5 cups

Recipe: ¼ teaspoon salt = 0.25 teaspoons

In School:

Test score: ¾ correct = 0.75 = 75%

Field length: ⅔ km = 0.67 km

In Shopping:

Price: ₹99.99 (almost ₹100)

Weight: 0.250 kg = 250 grams
