Class 6 – Chapter 1: Knowing Our Numbers
Introduction
Mathematics begins with
numbers. We use numbers every day –
for counting, measuring, buying, selling, and comparing.
In this chapter, we will learn how to:
- Compare large numbers
- Arrange numbers in ascending and descending order
- Use place value to understand numbers better
- Form and read large numbers using the Indian and International systems
Comparing Numbers
To compare numbers, first look at the number of digits.
A number with more digits is always greater.
If two numbers have the same number of digits, compare digit by digit starting from the left.
Example:
Compare 5,642 and 6,103.
Both are 4-digit numbers, so compare first digit:
\( 6 > 5 \).
Therefore, \( 6,103 > 5,642 \).
Forming Numbers
We can form the largest number by arranging digits in descending order,
and the smallest number by arranging digits in ascending order.
Example:
Using digits 3, 7, 0, 8:
Largest number = 8730
Smallest number = 0378 = 378
Place Value
Place value tells us the value of a digit based on its position.
For example, in 4,352:
- 2 is in the ones place → value = 2
- 5 is in the tens place → value = 50
- 3 is in the hundreds place → value = 300
- 4 is in the thousands place → value = 4000
